Aamir Khan (2005-2021) – She first met the ‘perfectionist’ actor, producer, and director Aamir Khan during the shooting of Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001). They began dating sometime later and tied the knot on December 28, 2005, in Panchgani. The couple experienced a few miscarriages before welcoming their son Azad Rao Khan (b. November 25, 2011) via surrogacy. They named their son after the freedom fighter, Abul Kalam Azad. Her first cousin is the actress Aditi Rao Hydari. Her paternal grandfather J. Rameshwar Rao was also Aditi’s maternal grandfather. He was the Raja of Wanaparthy, which was a large estate under the Nizam of Hyderabad and is now one of Telangana’s districts.
Kiran began her career by assisting director Ashutosh Gowariker in his critically acclaimed period drama, Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001). The film was nominated at the 2002 Academy Awards in the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category but lost to the Bosnian film No Man’s Land (2001).
She worked with Gowariker again as an assistant director in the Shahrukh Khan-starrer, Swades: We, the People (2004).
Kiran starred as an extra in Farhan Akhtar‘s cult film Dil Chahta Hai (2001), in which her future husband played the lead role.
She was the second assistant director to Mira Nair during the shooting of the indie hit, Monsoon Wedding (2001). The film bagged the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ award at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
